Arma de Instruccion Masiva

Arma de Instruccion Masiva

ABOUT THE ARTIST: Raul Lemesoff was born on September 8, 1972, in Parana, Entre Rios, Argentina. Self-taught artist. In 1993 He started working for the newspaper "Hora Cero" as a photographer. That same year he made his first photo exhibition at the Terminus, Malargue, Argentina. In 1994 he traveled to the U.S., where he consolidated his career as a photojournalist working for several newspapers and galleries. Interested in new artistic experiences he started working with sculpture, and specialized in experimental "moving sculptures". In 2000 he became part of the staff of the Art Car Museum in Houston, Texas, where he curated one of James Harrithas most significant exhibition, "Secret War" amongst others. In 2001 he won the First Prize in the Art Car Parade, with a piece titled “Illegal Inmigrant Car”. Internal factors and the daily reality, where combined for the creation of his first WEAPON OF MASS INSTRUCTION, a "peace tank" that merges art, culture, street intervention and political protest against the weapons of mass destruction. The “Weapon of Mass Instruction” won Second Prize in the Art Car Parade 2003. With this vehicle he toured several U.S states, with a pacific message against the invasion of Iraq. During his stay in the U.S Lemesoff was fortunate to work with artists like Nestor Topchy, David Best and Larry Fuente. But his greatest artistic influence was Salvatore Scarpitta. In 2004 he returned to Argentina and after a short business experience he got back to building the second “Weapon of Mass Instruction” which soon became an icon and a symbol of culture in the City of Buenos Aires. It was declared of “Cultural Interest” in Buenos Aires and many other Argentine provinces. In 2010 he was commissioned to build a third “Weapon of Mass Instruction” in The Hague, Netherlands, to promote the “Writers Unlimited” festival, giving a firm step towards the consolidation of his “global army of peace” !!! Traveling with the Weapon of Mass Instruction through Argentina, giving free books, screening films, inviting artists to places where these cultural events seldom reach, and sharing experiences with different communities has been one of the main activities of the artist. The project naturally transcended the artistic and cultural stage, to become a social project. Since then, he’s been getting attention from the media around the country and abroad. He’s been “guest of honor” in every book fair along Argentina and Uruguay, impulsing the project even further. During his days in Buenos Aires he is dedicated to collecting book donations, recycling materials for artistic purposes, and experimenting with glass, electricity, magnetism, molding, photo, video and writing. He also organizes artistic and cultural events such as the “Independent Book Fair” in countless towns in Argentina and South America. For the last three years he has been working to recover one of the oldest buildings in the city of Buenos Aires, abandoned by the government for real estate speculation. With great effort, the venue is becoming a public lively space where different independent artistic and cultural disciplines take place. In June 2015 he will be one of the invited guests to talk of his experiences in Bozar (Palace of beaux arts) in Belgium for the 8th EU-LAC summit.
